Hello, and welcome to the compulsory legal stuff that nobody reads, including me! I’m Ashley Cox, author of The Blind Man’s Workshop and the developer of an app that you’re interested in downloading, or have downloaded. If it’s the latter – thank you! If it’s the former, what are you waiting for?
I build apps I think are useful, solve a problem that existing apps don’t, include features that other apps lack, substitute apps that are unavailable on a platform, or simply because I think they’re cool.
I don’t build apps to steal your data, hoard your secrets or sell your information. I don’t bombard you with ads, or lock you into recurring subscriptions. I want you to enjoy using my apps, and I hope you find them useful.
I try to collect as little data as possible. Frankly, data storage is expensive and I don’t want the liability. Collecting data is sometimes necessary, so here’s how I handle it.
If you contact me to request a feature, tell me about a bug, complain about the very existence of my apps, or tell em how my apps have changed your life, I’ll obviously have your eMail address, your name, and the content of your message. I’ll use your details and the content for the purposes of responding to you, fixing bugs or fulfilling your feature requests. I won’t sell your data, and I take security seriously so third parties shouldn’t be able to steal it either.
Sometimes, apps and external services collect anonymous info about the device you’re using. This is mostly limited to beta testers, who’re knowingly testing pre-release versions of the app using platforms like Apple’s TestFlight.
Sometimes, apps integrate third-party services using their APIs. These are services used to gather information or interact with external providers). Apps might also let you share content to social platforms. The data these companies can collect through the app itself is limited by design, usually limited to your IP address and sometimes your location if you choose to provide it.
I only integrate trusted services, usually from big tech companies who probably have all of your data anyway. I ensure that my apps don’t provide any more data that is required for an integration to function.
None of this data can be used to identify you. My apps don’t collect usage data by design. What you do on your devices, even when you’re using my apps is none of my business. If you want to reach out and tell me about yourself, your devices and your experience of using my apps, I welcome you to do so. But if you don’t, that’s fine.
If you buy an app from me through the iOS app store, Mac app store or Google Play store, Apple or Google handles the money. I never see your credit card number. I just get a digital “thumbs up” that you paid, and eventually a combined payout of my earnings minus the (frankly insane) cut they take.
I take reasonable measures to protect your information. I use encryption, secure servers, and strong passwords. However, please understand that no system is impenetrable. If somebody is determined to hack me, and they have enough resources to back them, they will likely succeed. However as this document hopefully outlines, I don’t collect any data that you need to be worried about, so there’s nothing they can steal. And you can rest assured I’ll pay them back, becuase revenge is sweet.
Depending on where you live (like the EU or California), you have specific rights. However, I believe in privacy. Regardless of who you are or where you live, you can ask me to divulge any data I have on you, to delete any of your data from servers under my control and correct any incorrect data I hold. Just reach out via the contact page).
This policy is dated at the top because things change. Laws, features, app requirements, and technology. Updates will be made on this page. If I feel a a change is big enough to warrant an in -app notification, I may add one in a subsequent version. Don’t expect it though.
It’s your responsibility to determine who you trust to handle your data, and to ensure that your data is being managed responsible. That includes, unfortunately, reading policies like this. The reality is we live in a digital world, where data is king. Your data is out there no matter how careful you are. Just know that I respect you, your data and your right to privacy.
TLDR: I collect as little information about you as I can, often none at all. You’re welcome to contact me) about the apps, your data or anything else at any time.
