English walnut is an absolute pleasure on the lathe. It shears cleanly under a sharp bowl gouge with minimal end-grain tear-out. It isn’t quite as dark or uniform as American black walnut. It takes a crisp detail well and burnishes to a deep, silky luster without needing to rely on heavy film finishes.
